The TRB Annual Meeting program covers all transportation modes, with more than 4,000 presentations in nearly 650 sessions and workshops addressing topics of interest to all attendees—policy makers, administrators, practitioners, researchers, and representatives of government, industry, and academic institutions. More than 85 sessions and workshops will address the spotlight theme for 2011: Transportation, Livability, and Economic Development in a Changing World.

For more than 10 years, the Compendium of Papers was distributed to TRB Annual Meeting attendees as a compact disc. The 2011 Annual Meeting marks the first time that the Compendium is distributed as part of TRB Annual Meeting Online offering web-access to ALL information collected from the TRB 90th Annual Meeting. |
TRB Annual Meeting Online: Full 90th Annual Meeting Content Now Available

Over 2,200 technical papers, slides and posters of more than 3,500 program presentations, and videos of over 40 high-profile sessions from the 2011 TRB 90th Annual Meeting are now available through the TRB Annual Meeting Online (AMOnline) portal. In one search, the AMOnline portal allows users to quickly find all available papers, visual aids, and recordings by session, presentation, author, subject area, and more.
All employees of Year-Round TRB Sponsors and TRB 90th Annual Meeting Patrons, as well as 90th Annual Meeting registrants may access 90th Annual Meeting content in the TRB AMOnline portal for at additional charge. Employees of TRB Sponsors and Annual Meeting Patrons must create an account using their work email address in order to receive complimentary access. Annual Meeting registrants must have their Annual Meeting confirmation number to login to the portal. Instructions for creating accounts and accessing AMOnline content are available on the portal.

New and Young Attendees Welcome Session

Attendees age 35 or younger and everyone attending the TRB Annual Meeting for the first time—or for the first time in several years—are invited to attend this session. The program offers a brief overview of TRB, tips on navigating the Annual Meeting, the role that TRB can play in career development, and an opportunity to become involved in TRB activities.

Thomas B. Deen Distinguished Lecture

“Railroads and the New Normal: Impacts of Lean and Green” is the title of the lecture that James W. McClellan will deliver as the recipient of the 2011 Thomas B. Deen Distinguished Lectureship award. Mr. McClellan is Vice President, Woodside Consulting Group, Virginia Beach, Virginia.
The Deen Distinguished Lectureship award recognizes the career contributions and achievements of an individual in areas covered by the Boards Technical Activities Division.
Honorees present overviews of their technical areas, covering the evolution, status, and prospects for the future. |

Mr. McClellan’s unique career in rail transportation has included service in various capacities for the Southern Railway (now Norfolk Southern), the U.S. Department of Transportation, Amtrak, the U.S. Railway Association, and the Association of American Railroads.
He was involved in the creation of Amtrak and, as one of its first employees, helped with the start-up of the new passenger rail carrier. He was also involved in the major freight railroad restructurings that defined the industry during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, including the creation of Conrail and the split of Conrail between Norfolk Southern and CSX.

The Chairman's Luncheon is the premier event and the largest single gathering at the Annual Meeting, attended by leaders in the transportation field from the United States and abroad. The program includes the introduction of new Executive Committee members and officers and presentation of TRB’s most prestigious awards.
Deborah A. P. Hersman, Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), will be the featured speaker. Hersman, who was a senior professional staff member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation before becoming a Member of the NTSB in 2004, is expected to share her perspective on transportation safety for all modes.
