JOIN / SUPPORT TRB

As TRB’s reach continues to grow, we are working to become more diverse in our partnerships, more inclusive of new stakeholders, and more global in our outlook. As part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) provides leadership in transportation improvements and innovation through trusted, timely, impartial, and evidence-based information exchange, research, and advice regarding all modes of transportation. Our mission is to provide leadership in transportation innovation and progress through research and information exchange, conducted within a setting that is objective, interdisciplinary, and multimodal.

This innovation cannot occur without the participation of more than 8,000 engineers, scientists, and other transportation researchers and practitioners from the public and private sectors and academia, all who contribute their expertise in the public interest by participating on TRB committees, panels, and task forces. Others get involved and support TRB activities as TRB Global Affiliates, by participating in TRB sponsored conferences, workshops and webinars, authoring technical papers, contract research reports, and much more. All of this work culminates at our Annual Meeting, which attracts the more than 14,000 transportation professionals that are representative of the broader TRB community.

The tabs below highlight several exciting ways that TRB seeks to launch and support new programs and initiatives, including a revamped Global Affiliate program, TRB Forums, and expanded opportunities to participate in the Annual Meeting.

There are several ways for TRB and its constituents to develop a mutually beneficial partnership. Below are options to be involved and support TRB.

TRB BOARDS AND FORUMS

Marine Board

The Marine Board identifies research needs and provides a forum for exchange of information relating to new technologies, laws and regulations, economics, the environment, and other issues affecting the marine transportation system, port operations, coastal engineering, and marine governance. Formed in 1965, the Marine Board is an internationally recognized source of expertise on maritime transportation and marine engineering and technology. In response to requests from sponsoring agencies or on its own initiative, the Marine Board serves the national interest by providing evaluations and advice concerning the ability of the nation's marine and maritime industries to operate safely and efficiently and in an environmentally responsible manner.

As part of TRB, the Marine Board both enhances and is supported by TRB's standing committees, particularly those involved with ports and channels, inland water transport, planning, and the environment. The Marine Board coordinates and works closely with other boards of the National Academies in areas of mutual interest.

TRB SPONSORS

TRB Core Program Sponsors are the major source of financial support for TRB's core technical activities. Federal, state, and local government agencies, and professional societies and organizations that represent various industry groups are eligible to be TRB sponsors. Fees and services are negotiated with each sponsor to best serve its particular needs and to provide fundamental support for the Board's programs and activities of interest to the entire transportation community. Sponsors are represented on the TRB Executive Committee. In addition, the transportation departments of the 50 states and the District of Columbia each have an official representative to provide liaison with the Board. Organizations that are TRB sponsors are entitled to display educational, non-commercial exhibits at the TRB Annual Meeting.

State DOT Sponsors collectively contribute over $7.8 million annually to the TRB Core Programs. Our state sponsors include the Highway and Transportation Departments of the 50 states and DC.

For more information regarding TRB Core Program Sponsorship please contact:

For additional information, contact Patrice Davenport (pdavenport@nas.edu; 202-334-2516.)

There are five different levels of affiliate support that organizations can provide to TRB so that organizations can best pick the package that meets their budget. The Global Affiliate Benefits Chart lists the benefits provide in appreciation with the various levels of support. All benefits included at a particular level of support are shown with a check mark (which means the benefit is part of the package) or a percentage discount (which conveys a benefit discount at that level of support).
