JOIN / SUPPORT TRB
As TRB’s reach continues to grow, we are working to become more diverse in our partnerships, more inclusive of
new stakeholders, and more global in our outlook. As part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) provides leadership in transportation improvements and innovation through trusted, timely, impartial, and evidence-based information exchange, research, and advice regarding all modes of transportation. Our mission is to provide leadership in transportation innovation
and progress through research and information exchange, conducted within a setting that is objective, interdisciplinary,
and multimodal.
This innovation cannot occur without the participation of more than 8,000 engineers, scientists, and other transportation
researchers and practitioners from the public and private sectors and academia, all who contribute their
expertise in the public interest by participating on TRB committees, panels, and task forces. Others get
involved and support TRB activities as TRB Global Affiliates, by participating in TRB sponsored conferences,
workshops and webinars, authoring technical papers, contract research reports, and much more. All of this
work culminates at our Annual Meeting, which attracts the more than 14,000 transportation professionals
that are representative of the broader TRB community.
The tabs below highlight several exciting ways that TRB seeks to launch and support new programs and
initiatives, including a revamped Global Affiliate program, TRB Forums, and expanded
opportunities to participate in the Annual Meeting.
There are several ways for TRB and its constituents to develop a mutually beneficial partnership. Below are options to be involved and support TRB.
TRB BOARDS AND FORUMS
Marine Board
The Marine Board identifies research needs and provides a forum for exchange of information relating to new technologies, laws and regulations, economics, the environment, and other issues affecting the marine transportation system, port operations, coastal engineering, and marine governance. Formed in 1965, the Marine Board is an internationally recognized source of expertise on maritime transportation and marine engineering and technology. In response to requests from sponsoring agencies or on its own initiative, the Marine Board serves the national interest by providing evaluations and advice concerning the ability of the nation's marine and maritime industries to operate safely and efficiently and in an environmentally responsible manner.
As part of TRB, the Marine Board both enhances and is supported by TRB's standing committees, particularly those involved with ports and channels, inland water transport, planning, and the environment. The Marine Board coordinates and works closely with other boards of the National Academies in areas of mutual interest.

Forum on Preparing for Automated Vehicles and Shared Mobility
The National Academies/TRB Forum on Preparing for Automated Vehicles and Shared Mobility (Forum on AVs and Shared Mobility) was formed in 2017 to bring together public, private and research organizational partners to discuss, identify, and facilitate fact-based research needed to deploy automated vehicles and shared mobility services in a manner and timeframe that informs policy to best meet long-term goals, and to share perspectives on these issues. The long-term goals include increasing safety, reducing congestion, enhancing accessibility, increasing sustainability, and encouraging economic development and equity.

THE TRB GLOBAL AFFILIATE PROGRAM
You and your organization are cordially invited to become a Global Affiliate of the Transportation
Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine and help
support the way the world travels, ship goods, and connects.
As a TRB Global Affiliate, your organization will be helping to support the volunteer work of thousands of transportation leaders
and professionals at all levels of government, the private sector, and academia working collectively
to promote progress in transportation through innovation and research.
In appreciation for their support, Global Affiliate organizations receive a selection of TRB services and products.
These include opportunities for participation in selected programs, access to knowledge,
and exposure of their organization to the TRB community. Global Affiliate packages are designed to match the specific interests
and needs of various size organizations.
Through research management TRB helps foster transportation
technology and services. Its publications and online resources address valuable
information regarding virtually any issue related to transportation. Through its
convening activities, TRB brings together bright and diverse minds to explore and
advance knowledge on challenges facing the transportation community. Through its
advising role, TRB develops policy studies that tackle complex and often controversial
issues of national significance.
TRB's mission--to promote innovation and progress in transportation through research--is as pertinent today as it was in 1920 when TRB was formed. Help support the mission of TRB and the work of more than 8,000 volunteers
by becoming a TRB Global Affiliate. For additional information, contact Patrice Davenport
(pdavenport@nas.edu; 202-334-2516.)
There are five different levels of affiliate support that organizations can provide to TRB so that organizations can best pick the package that meets their budget. The Global Affiliate Benefits Chart lists the benefits provide in appreciation with the various levels of support. All benefits included at a particular level of support are shown with a check mark (which means the benefit is part of the package) or a
percentage discount (which conveys a benefit discount at that level of support).
YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THE TRB COMMUNITY HAS IMPACT:
- 190+ standing committees
-
8,000+ volunteers serving on committees and panels who hail from engineering, science, law, transportation
operations, and from the public and private sectors and academia
- 14,000+ attendees at the TRB Annual Meeting
- 800+ sessions and workshops at the TRB Annual Meeting
- 90+ webinars annually
- 32,000+ webinar attendees annually
- 70+ TRB meetings and conferences hosted annually
- 200+ publications annually

Global Affiliates receive benefits that are equal to or exceed the level of support. Therefore,
no part of Global Affiliate support will be considered a charitable contribution. The National
Academies and TRB reserve the right to not accept or to discontinue the support from an affiliate
organization if such support could be perceived as creating a conflict of interest in regards
to studies being conducted by the National Academy of Sciences or TRB.
