11th Light Rail Transit Conference
Renewal and Growth

With the theme “Growth and Renewal” the 2009 Joint Light Rail Conference will focus on meeting the demands of rapidly growing light rail systems, as well as the needs of older systems facing renewal. Original older systems are now reaching an age of maturity requiring attention to infrastructure and system upgrading. Light rail and specifically the streetcar have reappeared as tools to aid downtown circulation and spur urban development and the 2009 conference will address special industry needs in their renewal and growth.
The 2009 Joint Light Rail Conference will host twelve sessions under two tracks, along with two workshops on transit security and operations training and five special LRT system tours . Sessions include:

• Controlling Capital Costs: Design and Delivery Innovations
• Stations, Stops and Art in Transit
• Traffic Engineering Issues: LRT Performance
• BRT and LRT, What is the Role for Each Mode
• Energy, Environment and Transit: Making Systems “Greener” and Energy Efficient
• Vehicle Technology: The Next Generation Vehicle
• Infrastructure Maintenance: Renewal/Refurbishment
• Streetcar Circulators and the New Urbanism
• Regulations and Standards
• Operations: Supervision and Service Quality
• Operations Planning: Doing More with Less
The conference is jointly sponsored by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) and the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority is the host system. The conference planning committee chair is John Wilkins, New Jersey Transit and the vice-chair is Winston Simmonds, Port Authority of Allegheny County.
