New Member of the TRB Executive Committee Announced: Dr. James M. Tien, University of Miami
Dr. James M. Tien, Distinguished Professor and Dean Emeritus, College of Engineering at the University of Miami, has been newly appointed to serve on the TRB Executive Committee. Dr. Tien was elected into the National Academy of Engineering in 2001. Prior to his work with the University of Miami, Dr. Tien served as the Yamada Corporation Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), where he joined its Department of Electrical, Computer and Systems Engineering in 1977. While at RPI, he established the interdisciplinary Department of Decision Sciences and Engineering Systems as its founding chair, and twice served as the Acting Dean of Engineering. He has also held leadership positions at the Bell Telephone Laboratories and at the Rand Corporation. Dr. Tien’s areas of research interest include informatics, decision-making, and risk.
The TRB Executive Committee
is the senior policy body of TRB, and provides oversight to ensure that TRB's activities are appropriate for the National Academies and constructive to the transportation system and the nation. Ongoing and proposed TRB projects are addressed during each Executive Committee meeting and are approved, rejected, or accepted after modification. The committee is composed of approximately 25 members. Members are appointed by Marcia McNutt, Chair of the National Research Council (NRC) and are selected to provide balanced representation of transportation modes, academic disciplines, private and public sectors, levels of government, geographical regions, and other relevant factors. Members are appointed for a term of three years and may be reappointed for one term.
