Effective November 1, 2012, Elmer (Bud) Danenberger, the retired chief for Offshore Regulatory Programs at the former Minerals Management Service, U.S. Department of the Interior; Jeanne M. Grasso, Esq., Partner, Blank Rome, Washington, D.C.; and Dr. Karlene H. Roberts, Professor Emeritus, Walter A. Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley, were appointed to 3-year terms on TRB's Marine Board.

Announcement of FY 2013 TCRP Projects for Potential Contractors

The research projects to be undertaken by TRB’s Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) as part of its Fiscal Year 2013 activities have been identified and are now available for review. Requests for Proposals related to the individual projects are expected to be issued starting in March 2013.

TRB Webinar: Airport Terminal Planning and Design, A Focus on Wayfinding and Roadways

TRB will conduct a webinar on Thursday, December 6, 2012, from 2:00 PM ET to 3:30 PM ET that will feature research conducted by TRB’s Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) about various aspects of terminal planning and design, with an emphasis on wayfinding and airport curbside and terminal area roadway operations. There is no fee to register for this webinar, participants must register in advance, and 1.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available for Accredited Airport Executives (A.A.E.) who attend this webinar. This webinar is approved by the American Institute of Certified Planners for 1.5 certification maintenance credits.

TRB Webinar: Geotech Tools: Engineering Tools & Technology Selection Guidance for Geotechnical, Structural & Pavement Engineers

TRB will conduct a webinar on December 20, 2012, from 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. ET as part of a TRB second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) project that will explore a web-based information system for 46 geoconstruction and ground improvement technologies. Participants must register in advance of the webinar, and there is a fee for non-TRB Sponsor employees. A certificate for 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDH) will be provided to attendees who register and attend the webinar as an individual.

Adapting Freight Models and Traditional Freight Data Programs for Performance Measurement

TRB is sponsoring the conference on Adapting Freight Models and Traditional Freight Data Programs for Performance Measurement April 30 - May 1, 2013, in Washington, D.C. The conference will explore the use of information from the Freight Analysis Framework, other existing freight models, and traditional freight data programs as means to provide key measures for the national freight system.

RFP: Field Performance of Corrugated Pipe Manufactured with Recycled Polyethylene Content

TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) has issued a request for proposals to perform in-soil testing of corrugated pipe produced with recycled high-density polyethylene based on the criteria and specification limits established by NCHRP Project 4-32: Performance and Quality Control of Corrugated Pipe Manufactured with Recycled Polyethylene Content. Proposals are due January 14, 2013.

TRB’s Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) has issued a request for proposals to develop a guidebook to help airports develop and/or maintain a cyber security program. The project will also develop multi-media materials that address risk awareness by highlighting the different cyber security threats likely to be confronted by airports that can be used by cyber security/information technology professionals to educate airport staff. Proposals are due January 23, 2013.

TRB Security, Emergency Management, and Infrastructure Protection Research Status Report

Since September 11, 2001, 125 security-, emergency management-, and infrastructure protection-related planning and implementation projects have been initiated through the Transportation Research Board (TRB). Ninety-two of these projects have been completed; 15 projects are in progress; and 18 projects have contracts pending or are currently in development. This report, updated monthly, provides information on about $17.5 million worth of completed and ongoing TRB security research.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s FY 2013 Top Management Challenges

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of the Inspector General has released a report that highlights the agency’s top nine management challenges, including ensuring that the Next Generation Air Transportation System advances safety in air travel, overseeing administration of high-speed intercity passenger rail grant funds, and strengthening financial management over grants.

Traffic Volume Trends: September 2012

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has released the latest issue of Traffic Volume Trends, which is a monthly report based on hourly traffic count data reported by the states. According to the report, travel on all roads and streets changed by -1.5 percent (-3.6 billion vehicle miles) for September 2012 as compared with September 2011.
