TRB Webinar: Learning about and Using the Updated Research in Progress (RiP) Database Interface
February 6, 2013
TRB will conduct a webinar on February 13, 2013, from 2 p.m.- 3 p.m. ET that will provide users of the TRB’s Research in Progress (RiP) website with information about RiP’s updated search interface and new search functionality. Participants must register in advance of the webinar, there are no professional credits associated with this webinar, and there is no fee to register for this webinar. The webinar will be of interest to all who use RiP to identify current research. Webinar attendees will be provided with guidance on how to enter new records in RiP, locate and modify current records, and delete records for completed projects. The first 30 minutes of the webinar will feature information from the presenter and the final 30 minutes is reserved for audience questions.

TRB will conduct a webinar on February 20, 2013, from 2 p.m.- 3 p.m. ET that will provide users of TRB’s TRID Database with information about navigating with an updated interface and new search functions. Participants must register in advance of the webinar, there are no professional credits associated with this webinar, and there is no fee to register for this webinar. In January 2013, TRB released an updated interface for the TRID Database and added search functions such as drop down lists for selecting search terms, searching by first and last names, and searching for more than one TRB subject area all helping to provide users with more powerful search functions.

Adapting Freight Models and Traditional Freight Data Programs for Performance Measurement Workshop

TRB is sponsoring the Adapting Freight Models and Traditional Freight Data Programs for Performance Measurement Workshop on April 30 - May 1, 2013, in Washington, D.C. The workshop will explore the adequacy of freight data and modeling for supporting performance measurement in public and private sector decision making by examining the use of information from the Freight Analysis Framework, other existing freight models, and traditional freight data programs as means to provide key measures for the national freight system. Performance measures likely to be address at the conference include capacity, throughput, reliability, and cost of the freight transportation system at national, multi-state corridor, and statewide scales. A revised preliminary program is now available. Early bird registration expires March 1, 2013.

Site Characterization and Monitoring for Highway Engineering Problems

TRB is sponsoring a session on Site Characterization and Monitoring for Highway Engineering Problems on September 9, 2013, in North Conway, New Hampshire, as part of the Highway Geology Symposium, September 9-12, 2013. The session will focus on case studies where site exploration, characterization, data analysis and/or instrumentation monitoring programs have been used to help solve engineering geological problems. The programs’ goals are to promote innovations that can progress to next generation technologies and methods.

TRB’s Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, No. 2321 consists of 13 papers that explore the effects of external distractions on behavior and vehicle control; driver inattention; overtaking of bicycles on rural roads; dynamic maximum speed limits; variable message sign-based route guidance; the processing spoken words while driving; simulator scenarios for assessing novice drivers; low-cost data recorders to investigate adult and teen driver differences; driver performance at high speeds; and driver response to flooded road signing.

Technical Assessment of Dry Ice Limits on Aircraft

TRB’s Hazardous Materials Cooperative Research Program (HMCRP) Report 11: Technical Assessment of Dry Ice Limits on Aircraft describes a technical approach to determining the maximum quantity of dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) that may be safely carried aboard aircraft. The report includes guidelines for helping to determine safe limits for carriage of dry ice on commercial airplanes and a CD-ROM-based software tool designed to assist in determining appropriate dry ice loadings.

Feasibility Study for Highway Hazardous Materials Bulk Package Accident Performance Data Collection

TRB’s Hazardous Materials Cooperative Research Program (HMCRP) Report 10: Feasibility Study for Highway Hazardous Materials Bulk Package Accident Performance Data Collection explores methods to collect and analyze performance data for U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT)-specified hazardous materials bulk packages such as portable tanks and cargo tank motor vehicles. The report also identifies and evaluates institutional challenges to data collection, and makes suggestions for overcoming these challenges.

Roundabouts and Emergency Evacuation 2012

TRB’s Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, No. 2312 consists of 8 papers related to roundabouts and 9 papers that address different aspects of emergency evacuation. The roundabout papers examine crash prediction models for roundabouts on high-speed rural roadways; vehicular capacity at multilane roundabouts with consideration of pedestrian crossings; public perceptions of roundabouts; estimating roundabout capacity; vehicle travel position on roundabouts in cold regions; vehicle delay on single-lane roundabouts; driver responses to pedestrian treatments at multilane roundabouts; and delay analysis of a single-lane roundabout with a slip lane.

Project Management Strategies for Complex Projects

TRB’s second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) Renewal Project R10 has released a prepublication, non-edited draft version of a report titled Project Management Strategies for Complex Projects that describes a five-dimensional project management approach for complex projects. The goal of the five-dimensional approach is to identify issues that should be planned and managed proactively, rather than retroactively. The five areas of the new project management approach address cost, schedule, engineering requirements, external influences, and financing.

Guidebook: Project Management Strategies for Complex Projects

TRB’s second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) Renewal Project R10 has released a prepublication, non-edited draft version of a report titled Guidebook: Project Management Strategies for Complex Projects that is designed to facilitate the application of the five-dimensional management approach for complex projects. The objective of the guidebook is to identify and communicate the critical factors involved in successfully managing complex transportation design and construction projects. A training course based on the information in the guidebook was also developed.

TRB’s Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) Report 160: Paratransit Emergency Preparedness and Operations Handbook includes guidance, strategies, tools, and resources to help paratransit service providers plan and prepare for, respond to, and recover from a range of emergencies. The guidance has applicability to urban, suburban, rural, and tribal paratransit operating environments.

The HERMES project, an international collaborative project funded by the European Commission FP7 program, is sponsoring the International Collaboration in Transportation Research Workshop on April 25-26, 2013, in Paris, France. The goal of the workshop is to create successful collaboration in transportation research across borders with the aim of creating suitable conditions for research innovation, understanding, and better use of resources and solutions to problems. TRB is an international partner on the HERMES project.
