TRB Volunteer Profile: Mark E. Felag
Mark Felag, P.E., Managing Engineer at the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT), is a featured volunteer in the
TR News. Mr. Felag helped implement many materials items, including both Superpave and the original Strategic Highway Research Program in Rhode Island. He has worked on the entire Rhode Island statewide network as well as indirectly on almost all state facilities across the country in his standards work.
Mr. Felag has experience in several modes of transportation. He has worked in materials, research, bicycle planning, transportation alternative projects, and asset management within RIDOT. Mr. Felag has also been a longtime member of the AASHTO Executive Board and Cement Chair on the Subcommittee on Materials, where he established and worked on the AASHTO-ASTM Harmonization Task Force. This task force worked with NCHRP to align two major cement specifications.
Outside of his professional life, Mr. Felag is a volunteer firefighter, sings songs and poems as 5 Cent, and conducts outreach to students to promote engineering and safety, visiting classrooms as the character P.E. Pothole.
At TRB, Mr. Felag has served as chair of the Concrete Materials and Placement Techniques Committee. He is currently a member of the Concrete Materials section.
