Preservation Approaches for High-Traffic-Volume Roadways (SHRP 2 Report S2-R26-RR-1)

SHRP 2 Report S2-R26-RR-1: Preservation Approaches for High-Traffic-Volume Roadways
documents the state of the practice of preservation treatment on
asphalt and concrete pavements. Although the focus of the project was on
treatments suitable for application on high-volume roadways, this
report also discusses current practices for low-volume roadways. The
information presented is derived from a detailed survey of
transportation agencies and a review of national and international
literature. In addition, the report provides a general framework for how
best practices are identified. Finally, general guidelines were
developed for the application of preservation treatments on high-volume
roadways. Report S2-R26-RR-1 is available online as an Adobe PDF document and in hardcopy through the TRB bookstore. Presented as a separate document, Guidelines for the Preservation of High-Traffic-Volume Roadways considers traffic volume, pavement condition, work-zone requirements, environmental conditions, and expected performance.

SHRP 2 First Fruits Report S2-R21-RW-1: 2008 Survey of European Composite Pavements explores in-service composite pavement sites in the Netherlands, Germany, and Austria in order to help assess the design, construction, and performance of composite pavement systems. The report also examines other issues that should be considered in the design and construction of new composite pavement systems. Report S2-R21-RW-1 is only available in electronic format.

Brief for Renewal Project R26: Preservation Approaches for High-Traffic-Volume Roadways

As transportation agencies grapple with decreased capital
budgets, pavement preservation will continue to be an important strategy
to extend the life of roadways. This project brief
highlights a new tool to help highway agency managers and engineers
preserve high-traffic-volume roadways in serviceable condition for
longer periods of time, at a lower cost, in a safer manner, and with
limited disruption to the traveling public. It describes the Guidelines
for the Preservation of High-Traffic-Volume Roadways, which is currently
available as a PDF on the SHRP 2 website and in print from the TRB
bookstore, and a final report of the research conducted in Renewal
Project R26: Preservation Approaches for High-Traffic-Volume Roadways,
which will be published later this year.

Recorded TRB Webinar: Pavement Preservation for High-Traffic-Volume Roadways

TRB conducted a web briefing or “webinar” on Wednesday, September 8, 2010. The webinar explored a project from SHRP 2 that developed pavement preservation strategies for high-traffic-volume roadways and preservation guidelines that are based on careful and complete assessments of factors such as traffic volume, pavement condition, environmental condition, costs, expected performance, and work zone requirements. Video Lecture on SHRP 2 Renewal and Implementation Activities at the ARCHES and SPENS Final Conference in August 2009

In August SHRP 2 Director Neil Hawks attended the final conference
on the Assessment and Rehabilitation of Central European Highway
Structures (ARCHES) and Sustainable Pavements for European New Member
States (SPENS) research projects on bridge and pavement research in
Ljubljana, Slovenia. These Renewal-related research programs were
sponsored by the European Union and managed by the Forum of European
Highway Research Laboratories (FEHRL). Neil Hawks’ presentation included
information about SHRP 2 projects—on modular pavement technology,
railroad/DOT coordination, and bridges designed for 100+ years of
service life—and plans for implementation. A video of the lecture is |
