Strategies for Improving the Project Agreement Process between Highway Agencies and Railroads
Posted November 1, 2010
SHRP 2 Research Report S2-R16-RR-1: Strategies for Improving the Project Agreement Process between Highway Agencies and Railroads examines the process by which highway agencies and railroads develop agreements for highway projects which interact with railways. The report examines the underlying causes of delay in the project-agreement process and developed model processes to address them. The report is available online as an Adobe PDF document and in hardcopy through the TRB bookstore. The model agreements (Appendix C of the report) are available in Microsoft Word format.

TRB Webinar: New SHRP 2 Tools for Underground Utility Location, Data Collection, and Analysis
Posted February 16, 2012
SHRP 2, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), conducted a webinar on February 15, 2012, that explored new tools for underground utility location, data collection, and analysis. Four SHRP 2 research projects are developing innovative tools for detecting the location and characteristics of underground utilities and for utilizing these data. Three of these projects are approaching significant milestones and the fourth has now been completed. There is no fee to register for this webinar and no professional development hours will be provided. A recording of the webinar is available in Windows Media Player format, and slides are available as a PDF. Responses to questions and comments from the webinar are available also as a PDF.
TRB Webinar: Railroad – DOT Institutional Mitigation Strategies
Posted September 7, 2011
TRB, in partnership with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, conducted a web seminar or “webinar” on August 31, 2011, that explored a SHRP 2 report, Strategies for Improving the Project Agreement Process between Highway Agencies and Railroads. The webinar explored model standard agreements, standard processes, and practices that can help public highway agencies and railroads reduce the time and cost of project reviews. Learn more about the webinar and access the recording on the following page.
Recorded Webinar: Advancing Technologies for Working with Underground Utilities: Current SHRP 2 Research
Posted August 11, 2011
SHRP 2, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation
Officials (AASHTO), conducted a web briefing or "webinar" on August 10,
2011, that explored four active SHRP 2 utility-related research
projects: Technologies for the Storage, Retrieval, and Utilization of
3-Dimensional Utility Location Data (R01-A); Multi-Sensor Platforms for
Locating Underground Utilities (R01-B); Development of Innovative
Technologies for the Location of Deep Utilities (R01-C); and
Identification of Utility Conflicts and Solutions (R15-B). Information
on the problems addressed by the research; the research approach; the
research products, including how these products can be used and when
they will be available was presented. A recording of the webinar is available in Windows Media Player format, and slides are available as a PDF. Responses to questions and comments from the webinar are available also as a PDF.

SHRP 2 Tools for Underground Utility Location, Data Collection, and Analysis—a New Project Brief
Posted March 16, 2012
The Common Ground Alliance estimates that there are 35 million miles of
underground utilities in the United States. That’s about the same as the
distance between Earth and Mars. When a highway construction project is
surprised by a utility, the results can include redesign costs, delay
costs, change orders, claims, and damages (including repairs,
environmental releases, and even human casualties). To reduce these
negative impacts, several SHRP 2 projects are developing new tools to
help locate and characterize underground utilities, as well as new tools
to identify utility conflicts and solutions. This 8-page document
provides an overview of the SHRP 2 projects related to underground
utilities. It includes a brief description and the status of each
project.
Project Brief R16: Railroad-DOT Institutional Mitigation Strategies
Posted January 27, 2010
TRB’s second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) has released a project brief that summarizes SHRP 2 Renewal project R16, which explored strategies, arrangements, techniques, and processes designed to help facilitate beneficial relationships between railroads and public agencies. The final report of the project includes eight model agreements that can be modified to meet the legal requirements and accepted contracting processes of individual agencies and railroads.
