TRB Volunteer Profile: Shawn M. Turner
Shawn M. Turner, senior research engineer at the Texas
A&M Transportation Institute (TTI), is a featured volunteer in the
TR News. Mr. Turner is also head of the Mobility Division in TTI’s Planning and Environmental Group. His research interests are data and information systems for decision making and pedestrian and bicycle transportation.
Mr. Turner has been instrumental in monitoring and saving real-time data since the 1990s. He works with public agencies to implement GPS data sets and with private data providers to broaden and implement their products. He has also developed systematic test protocols for evaluating the accuracy of pedestrian and bicyclist counters and supported adoption of pedestrian hybrid beacons and other crossings. In addition, Mr. Turner has developed a trail monitoring guide for the National Park Service, updated the Federal Highway Administration’s bicycle and pedestrian transportation university course, and conducted some of the first comprehensive automatic trail counter evaluations.
At TRB, Mr. Turner chairs the Pedestrians and Cycles section and is a member of the safety and systems users group.
