Seismic Performance of Integral Abutment Highway Bridges in Illinois
The Illinois Center for Transportation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has released a report that examines the seismic behavior of typical integral abutment bridges (IAB) in southern Illinois and explores improvements to IAB seismic designs. IABs lack of expansion joints between the superstructure and abutment leads to decreased environmental damage at the abutment seat. However, elimination of expansion joints can also lead to development of complex soil-structure-interaction limit states at the abutment and its foundation when an IAB is subjected to lateral loads.
