TRB Webinar: Greenhouse Gas Reduction and Sustainable Construction Strategies for Airports

TRB conducted a webinar on October 10, 2012, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM ET that featured research conducted by TRB’s Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and implementing sustainable airport construction practices. The webinar has been recorded and is available on our website.

Airport practitioners are interested in taking every opportunity to reduce the environmental footprint of their facility. Airports can reduce the impact of their activities in many ways, such as pursuing facility-wide resource efficiency initiatives, focusing on specific projects that minimize resource consumption, and using sustainable construction methods while building new facilities. In some cases, airports may be able to monetize these activities through participation in carbon markets.

This webinar will explore findings from three ACRP reports from the following presenters:

Kristin Lemaster, CDM
ACRP Report 56: Handbook for Considering Practical Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Strategies for Airports
Ms. Lemaster will focus on the practical applications of her team’s research and summarize strategies for how airport practitioners can identify, evaluate, prioritize, and implement practical, low-cost strategies to reduce and manage greenhouse gas emissions.

Eugene Peters, Ricondo and Associates, Inc.
ACRP Report 42: Sustainable Airport Construction Practices
Mr. Peters will focus on how airport practitioners can apply the research results in ACRP Report 42 to their circumstances. He will convey to the audience sustainable practices, methods, and procedures to follow if they are planning new airport facilities, and what materials that, if used during construction, may have a sustainable, positive economic, operational, environmental, or social effect.

Greg Bertelsen, Pace Global
ACRP Report 57: The Carbon Market: A Primer for Airports
Mr. Bertelsen’s presentation will explore information on carbon and other environmental credit trading markets and highlight the potential opportunities and challenges to an airport's participation in these markets.

Moderated by: Janell Barrilleaux, Federal Aviation Administration

Webinar Learning Objectives:
Audience members will gain an understanding of strategies to reduce the environmental impact of their operations, from a range of everyday, low-cost initiatives, to ways to execute an airport construction project sustainably. Participants will gain an understanding of carbon markets, including their relevance to airport operations, their structure, driving forces, sponsor obligations, and the impacts of current policies.

Registration:
ACRP is sponsoring this webinar, so there is no fee associated with registering for this webinar. After registering you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
