TRB Annual Meeting

Empathy at the intersection Logo V2_Page_2.png

How does it feel to cross a busy intersection as an older adult? What can’t you see when operating a dump truck? Could you navigate city streets behind the wheel of a bus? Join the Empathy at the Intersection experience at the TRB Annual Meeting Exhibit Hall in booth 860. It will offer a collection of five empathy-building experiences geared to put transportation professionals in another person’s shoes. Participate, ponder, provoke, and shift perspectives with us.

  • There are only two more weeks to register at the advance registration rate! Start building your personal program and register by January 3 before rates increase.

  • Thanks to the 2025 Annual Meeting Patrons for their commitment to transportation research and innovation.

Roadway lighting_NCHRP WOD 420.JPG

The impact of roadway lighting on flora and fauna might be considered important for a roadway along a wildlife reserve or in a coastal region. User safety might be more critical on interstates and major arterials. NCHRP Research Report 940 was published in 2020 and provided comprehensive guidance on Solid State Lighting (SSL) design and implementation. The U.S. Bipartisan Infrastructure Law now provides opportunities for cities to upgrade their lighting infrastructure.

NCHRP Web-Only Document 420: Gaps and Emerging Technologies in the Application of Solid-State Roadway Lighting, released this week from TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program, narrows the knowledge gaps related to the further application of SSL.

Mike Cynecki.JPGMike Cynecki of Lee Engineering has been a champion of forward-looking ideas throughout his 44-year career. With persistence, research, and a clear vision of what could be, Cynecki promulgated the idea that “everyone is a pedestrian,” including transit riders
who walk or bike to and from stops and drivers who walk from a parking area to a destination. He foresaw a future in which walking and biking could shed the image of merely recreational activities to become
an integral part of daily transportation that fostered transportation equity by providing access for those who could not afford motorized options. Read more about Cynecki in the Profiles segment of TR News 351, the latest issue of TRB's quarterly magazine.
