TRB Webinar: Recent Roadway Geometric Design Research for Improved Safety and Operations

TRB Webinar: Recent Roadway Geometric Design Research for Improved Safety and Operations

TRB conducted a webinar on June 19, 2012, from 1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. ET that explored the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 432: Recent Roadway Geometric Design Research for Improved Safety and Operations. Please contact Reggie Gillum at RGillum@nas.edu for a link to the recorded webinar.

Given the abundance of literature on roadway geometric design issues, practitioners have faced challenges identifying the information that they need to do their job. NCHRP Synthesis 432 reviews and summarizes published literature from 2001 to 2011 related to safety and operational aspects of geometric design practices.

The webinar, like the report, will provide options to practitioners on where to find these sources to help them make more informed decisions on geometric design issues that impact safety and operations. NCHRP Synthesis 432 is an update to NCHRP Synthesis 299 that was published in 2001.

The report is structured to correspond to chapters in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, more commonly referred to as the Green Book.

The webinar will review NCHRP Synthesis 432 material on a corresponding chapter-by-chapter basis, highlighting key findings and important topics of geometric design research throughout the previous decade.

Webinar Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this webinar, attendees will be able to:
  • Recognize key geometric design research topics and findings from the previous decade
  • Locate source documents that provide further details on those topics and findings
  • Use NCHRP Synthesis 432 to conduct their own searches for recent research
  • Identify the development of that research in relation to key chapter topics of the 2004 and 2011 editions of the AASHTO Green Book.

Presenter:
Marcus Brewer, Texas Transportation Institute
