TRB Webinar: Performance based Sealant Grading (SG) Specifications for Hot-poured Crack Sealants

TRB conducted a webinar on October 23, 2012, from 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. ET that introduced new performance based sealant grading specifications for hot-poured crack sealants. Contact Reggie Gillum at RGillum@nas.edu for information on obtaining a link to the recorded webinar.

The webinar will explore the findings of the completed U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Pooled Fund Study, Performance Guidelines for the Selection of Hot-Pour Crack Sealants, and an ongoing FHWA Pooled Fund Study, Field Validation of Performance Guidelines. The laboratory tests and procedures developed to grade sealants will be explained.

This webinar was organized by the TRB Standing Committee on Sealants and Fillers for Joints and Cracks (AHD25).

  2. Laboratory Tests and Procedures to Grade Sealants 
    • Vacuum oven aging (VOA) representing long term aging
    • Crack sealant bending beam rheometer (CSBBR) for low temperature stiffness 
    • Adhesion test (AT) for low temperature adhesive properties
    • Direct tension test (DT) for low temperature cohesive properties
    • Dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) for high temperature grading and tracking resistance
  3. Selection of Thresholds for Low and High Temperature Sealant Grading 
    • Philosophy behind selection of thresholds
    • Field validation to determine the thresholds
  4. An Example to Illustrate Selection of Sealants 
    • An illustration of selecting right sealants for two candidate locations (north and south)
  5. Concluding Remarks

Learning Objectives:
The main learning objective of this webinar would be to increase awareness of the sealant grading system and to help attendees become familiar with the performance grading procedures for sealants. 

The audience will also understand why performance grading is needed for sealants and potential benefits of implementing the grading system in their states.

Professional Development Hour information:


A certificate for 1.5 Professional Development Hour (PDH) will be provided to Professional Engineers (PEs) who register and attend the webinar as an individual. For groups, only the person that registers and attends the session will receive a PDH certificate. 

Individuals registered as Florida PEs are required to email Reggie Gillum, RGillum@nas.edu, with their license number.

Please check with your licensing board to ensure that TRB webinar PDHs are approved by your board. 

This webinar was developed in May 2012. TRB has met the standards and requirements of the Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP).
