TRB Webinar: Emissions Inventories Considerations for Accurate Reporting

TRB Webinar: Emissions Inventories Considerations for Accurate Reporting

TRB conducted a webinar on November 4, 2014, from 2:00pm to 3:30pm ET that presented research on strategies to reduce emissions from powered ground support equipment (GSE) and particulate matter (PM) produced during landing by tires and brakes. Webinar presenters also discussed how to measure PM emissions from auxiliary power units (APUs). As regulations become more stringent for airports to report accurate emissions inventories, new guidance and methodologies are needed for reporting emissions.

This webinar provided 1.5 Continuing Education Units for Accredited Airport Executives.

TRB Webinar: Emissions Inventories Considerations for Accurate Reporting from The National Academies.

Webinar Presenters
  • John Pehrson, CDM Smith
  • Philip Whitefield, Missouri University of Science & Technology
  • Michael Kenney, KB Environmental Sciences, Inc.
Moderator: Brian Kim, Wyle

Webinar Outline
  • PART 1: ACRP Report 78: Airport Ground Support Equipment (GSE): Emission Reduction Strategies, Inventory, and Tutorial
    • Information to help airport practitioners assess and mitigate the contribution of GSE to air quality impacts at airports
    • Potential strategies to reduce emissions from powered GSE
  • PART 2: ACRP Report 97: Measuring PM Emissions from Aircraft Auxiliary Power Units, Tires, and Brakes
    • Results of a comprehensive test program designed to measure PM emissions from APUs and from tires and brakes during the landing phase of operation of in service commercial aircraft
    • Data obtained from the test program that was used to develop PM emission indices for APUs and tires
  • PART 3: Question and answer session
The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
  • Assess and mitigate the contribution of ground support equipment (GSE) to air quality impacts at airports; and
  • Discuss how to improve the accuracy of particulate matter (PM) emissions inventories.
