Candidates for most of these awards are identified internally and selected by TRB committees/leadership—the TRB Executive Committee for the William Carey and Roy Crum Distinguished Service Awards; the standing committees for the paper awards (papers submitted for consideration for presentation at the Annual Meeting and/or publication are considered for the appropriate paper awards; one of the awards—the Fred Burggraf—is for young authors, 35 years or younger).
The Deen Distinguished Lecturer is selected each year by the Technical Activities Council.
The Frank Turner Medal, which is not a TRB award but rather a joint award for which we serve as the secretariat, is given every other year. A selection committee identifies potential candidates and selects the recipient.
The Sharon Banks Award is one of two awards for which we solicit nominations broadly from those outside TRB. This award is given every other year. The announcement for the Sharon Banks award is publicized in TRB's weekly Transportation Research E-Newsletter.
The other award for which nominations are solicited is the TRB Outstanding Young Member Award. That award, which was established in 2012, recognizes a distinguished younger member of a TRB standing committee who has demonstrated exceptional service to TRB and achievements in transportation research, policy, or practice. The award, which is administered by the TRB Young Members Council, may be presented annually to a TRB volunteer who is 35 years of age or younger on April 15 in the year of the award. Nominations for this award are solicited broadly from the community, and is announced in the
TRB Transportation Research E-Newsletter each fall.
