SHRP 2 NDToolbox Will Launch May 21
Posted May 17, 2013
On Tuesday, May 21, SHRP 2 will launch the NDToolbox—an electronic repository of nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques. Information in the repository includes summaries of NDT technologies; documentation for recommended test procedures, protocols, and available standards and guidelines; samples of data output and guidance on interpreting and presenting results; and equipment features (including cost, availability and specifications). The NDToolbox covers NDT techniques for the following:
• Evaluating concrete bridge decks;
• Using field spectroscopy devices to fingerprint commonly used construction materials;
• Gathering uniformity measurements on new hot-mix asphalt (HMA) layers;
• Identifying delaminations between HMA layers;
• Conducting real-time smoothness measurements on portland cement concrete;
• Continuous deflection pavement measuring; and
• Mapping voids, debonding, delaminations, moisture, and other defects behind or within tunnel linings.
Learn more about the NDToolbox in the TRB webinar Nondestructive Testing Technologies for Concrete Bridge Decks (R06A) and by reading Nondestructive Testing to Identify Concrete Bridge Deck Deterioration (SHRP 2 Report S2-R06A-RR-1). On May 21, you can learn how to access the NDToolbox by joining the webinar; a recording will be made available to those who miss the live delivery. A link to the NDToolbox will also be posted to the blurb for the report at a later date.
Train-the-Trainer Pilot Courses for Incident Responders and Managers (*SHRP 2 Prepublication Report)
Posted May 14, 2013
Traffic incidents account for up to 25% of all congestion and 40% of nonrecurring congestion. Improving traffic incident management (TIM) practices offers regions a highly cost-effective and sustainable opportunity to improve the reliability of their roadways. SHRP 2 Project L12 (Improving Traffic Incident Scene Management) developed one of the first comprehensive, multidisciplinary, peer-validated national incident responder training curricula and materials for use by TIM programs in jurisdictions large and small across the country. To build on this research, SHRP 2 Project L32A (Train-the-Trainer Pilot Courses for Incident Responders and Managers) validated and improved the national TIM training program by training nearly 200 new TIM responders in four states. The final report for project L32A documents these activities.
* To make research available as early as possible, SHRP 2 is temporarily posting final reports that have been submitted by the research team, reviewed according to the relevant National Academy of Sciences procedures, and accepted for publication. These prepublication drafts, which have not been edited or formatted for publication, will be replaced by the final versions as they complete the editorial process.
SHRP 2 Safety Symposium and Workshop: July 11–12, 2013
Posted April 29, 2013
The Eighth Annual SHRP 2 Safety Symposium will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2013, 8:30 AM–5:00 PM, at the Keck Center of the National Academies, 500 Fifth St NW, Washington, D.C. On Friday, July 12, SHRP 2 will also hold a half-day ‘hands-on’ user workshop, which will focus on working with data that will be available on the SHRP 2 Naturalistic Driving Study data sharing website. This website, which will be continually updated throughout the study, will start to contain data by July 2013. Register now at http://trbsymposium.eventbrite.com/. If you have any questions, please contact Charles Fay at cfay@nas.edu.
SHRP 2 Tuesdays
Posted April 5, 2013
Beginning on May 7, 2013, and continuing throughout the year, every other Tuesday will be your opportunity to learn first-hand about SHRP 2 research and the resources that FHWA and AASHTO are making available to implement the research products. In each webinar, members of the research team will present and discuss the results of their work, providing a technical overview. Where products have been pilot tested or implemented, the user’s experience will be included. Additionally, representatives from FHWA and AASHTO will describe implementation opportunities.
Webinar participants can learn what new products are available to help address challenges facing nearly every transportation provider—reducing congestion, speeding construction, and improving safety—and how they can benefit from being early adopters of the products. The scheduled topics are closely aligned with the FHWA’s Implementation Assistance Program. SHRP 2 Tuesdays topics will be announced through the SHRP 2 News (subscribe) and the TRB e-newsletter (subscribe). Also look for news through your AASHTO and FHWA channels.
