Contactless Electrode for Fast Survey of Concrete Reinforcement Corrosion
TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) Project 176: Contactless Electrode for Fast Survey of Concrete Reinforcement Corrosion explores the development of an alternative, fast responding, noncontacting electrode for rapid assessment of corrosion condition of bridges. The method requires no surface pretreatment and avoids much of the delays and disruption associated with conventional reference electrodes. The sensor is conceptually suitable for operation from moving vehicles, offering the opportunity for extensive corrosion assessment that would be prohibitively expensive at present. The technology may enhance rapid assessment of corrosion condition of bridges at a lower cost, facilitate wider deployment than present methods, and improve the ability of transportation agencies to implement timely corrosion control measures.
