TRB Webinar: Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory Methods for State Transportation Departments

TRB conducted a web briefing or "webinar" on September 26, 2011 that addressed procedures that could help state transportation departments prepare a greenhouse gas (GHG) emission inventory of their operations. 

This webinar will provide participants with an overview of results from TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) project report, Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory Methodologies for State Transportation Departments. The report provides GHG accounting procedures to help state departments of transportation (DOTs) prepare a GHG emission inventory of their operations as well as ways to increase consistency across state DOT inventories.  “Operations” refers to the GHG emissions that occur through the daily activities associated with running a state DOT.  These GHG emissions occur directly through the operation of state DOT buildings and fleet, and indirectly through the products that the state DOT consumes, the waste it generates, the individuals it employs, and the contracts it manages.   

Participants will:
•    Learn about GHG accounting basics;
•    Learn to identify emission sources relevant to state DOTs;  
•    Develop knowledge of methods for completing GHG emission estimates;
•    Develop approaches for obtaining or approximating data; and,
•    Learn about other research, resources, and materials available to state DOTs to help them complete operational GHG inventories.

The second part of the webinar will provide results from a related NCHRP project report, which provides a synthesis of climate change and transportation research efforts at state DOTs, state universities, and the federal government.
