TRB Webinar: Truck Assumptions for Roundabout Design

Roundabouts are scalable intersections that can conform to a number of physical restraints that a location may present to a designer. TRB will host a webinar on Thursday, April 8, 2021 from 2:00-3:30 PM Eastern that will discuss how to build roundabouts using a design tool for the “swept path” of trucks. This tool utilizes truck characteristics and driving patterns at different sized roundabouts, and measures truck axle arrangements. Presenters will describe how modeling these truck metrics within a roundabout can encourage adaptability and changing of model settings to achieve a realistic swept path for trucks. They will illustrate design assumption information related to truck characteristics in order to provide methods that may lead to better intersection control for users.

This webinar was organized by the TRB Standing Technical Committee on Roundabout and Other Intersection Design and Control Strategies. It also features research from NCHRP Report 505: Review of Truck Characteristics as Factors in Roadway Design, NCHRP Report 572: Roundabouts in the United States, and NCHRP Report 672: Roundabouts: An Informational Guide – Second Edition.

  1. History of the research involving trucks and intersection design practice: Mike Mastaglio, Urban Engineers, Inc.
  2. Measurement of various elements of a truck and trailer (axles, spacing, kingpins): Andrew Thompson, Urban Engineers, Inc.
  3. Model settings and their adaptability for conducting proper “swept path” calculations on design concepts: Mike Mastaglio, Urban Engineers, Inc.
  4. Question and answer session: Brian Walsh, Washington State Department of Transportation

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify truck driving characteristics for roundabouts
  2. Utilize swept path design tools

Professional Development Hour Information

Professional engineers (PEs) who register and attend the entire webinar as an individual will be awarded 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). TRB’s webinar program awards PDH credits only to the registered individual, and not to other members of a group that view the webinar together. To be eligible for the credits, individuals must remain signed in for the entire webinar, including for any question and answer session following the presentations.
