Energy and Environmental Concerns 2006, Including 2006 Thomas B. Deen Distinguished Lecture

TRB’s Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board (TRR), No. 1983 includes the text of the 2006 Thomas B. Deen Distinguished Lecture by Abba Lichtenstein, “Preservation of Historic Transportation Facilities.”  This TRR also contains 20 papers that address transportation energy and environmental concerns.  Specific topics addressed by papers in this issue include the preservation of historic transportation facilities, integrating information technology in efficient transportation decision making, geographic information system analysis of accessibility as an indicator of potential land use changes and of induced impacts on the environment, analysis method for natural dispersion of highway storm water runoff in rural areas, and using gas cushions for the measurement and analysis of a hybrid vibration isolation wall.  This issue of the TRR: Journal also explores surface retexturing to reduce tire-road noise; environmental justice assessment in racially diverse areas; equity measures and their performance in transportation; environmental justice concentration zones for assessing transportation project impacts; policy perspectives on transportation finance, congestion, and equity; and estimating fuel use by idling commercial trucks.  In addition, the issue examines in-use fuel economy shortfall analysis using voluntarily reported fuel economy estimates, comparison of buyers of hybrid and conventional internal combustion engine automobiles, analysis model of hydrogen delivery scenario for hydrogen distribution options, urban station siting for hydrogen highway network, systems analysis of hydrogen transition with HyTrans, urban mobility and sustainability in Asia, transportation sector and supply chain performance and sustainability, the Kyoto protocol and sustainable cities, mixed land use for restraining trip generation, and benefits of incorporating environmental sustainability into bridge construction.

Individual TRRs, which are published on an irregular basis throughout the year, consist of collections of peer-reviewed papers on specific transportation subject areas and modes.  TRB's TRR Online service allows all visitors to identify papers of interest and review abstracts of those papers.  Access to the full papers is available to service subscribers and employees of TRB sponsors.  Papers may also be purchased on an individual basis.

Printed copies of TRR Journals may also be purchased on an annual subscription basis.  Each year, TRB publishes approximately 45 volumes of the TRR Journal, containing more than 800 papers grouped by subject.
