Committee on Ecology and Transportation Newsletter: September 2015
TRB’s Standing Committee on Ecology and Transportation has released the latest edition of its periodic newsletter. The issue highlights sessions that will be sponsored or cosponsored by the committee at the upcoming TRB 95th Annual Meeting; summarizes recent investigations into the issue of roadkill in the Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa; and addresses a study of the importance of verges--a narrow strip of vegetation bordering a path, sidewalk, or highway--as a habitat and enhancer of biodiversity.
The newsletter also addresses studies on vegetation conservation during expressway construction in the ecologically-sensitive area of Jilin Province, China; the completion of the Kitt Peak wildlife underpass on the Tohono O'odham Nation, Arizona; a new programmatic consultation for the Indiana Band and Norther Long-Eared Bat; and a roadkill mitigation success story in the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area, Limpopo Province, South Africa. In addition, the newsletter examines trends and issues in marine transportation and the environment.
Finally, don't miss the call for posters for the committee's poster session at the 95th Annual Meeting.
The online newsletter is published intermittently and is designed to disseminate information about current research and developments in ecology and transportation.
The opinions expressed in the Ecology and Transportation Newsletter are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Transportation Research Board or the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
