Do Risk-Taking Cyclists Have Different Sociodemographic Characteristics?
The relationships between some sociodemographic variables like gender, age, parenthood, use of a shared versus a personal bike, and some risky behaviors (such as helmet use, red-light running, and crossing an intersection with a very short time before the next passing vehicle) remain inconsistent or under-investigated. This article in TRB's Transportation Research Record journal details the observance of cyclists at two traffic signal intersections in the city center of Lille, France.
Among this study's findings:
- Men (versus women) and young (versus older) cyclists are less likely to wear a helmet and more likely to run red lights.
- Cyclists with (versus without) a child seat were more likely to wear a helmet, suggesting that parenthood influences risk perception.
- Shared (versus personal) bike users were found to be significantly less likely to wear a helmet and more likely to run red lights.
Sage Perspectives offers more details on the study.

Comparing the Cost of Electric and Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles in Ghana
Will developing countries adopt and use electric vehicles (EVs) in order to reduce air pollution and the deaths it causes? An article in TRB's Transportation Research Record journal compares the total cost per mile, in Ghana over 10 years, of owning and using EVs with that of internal combustion engine vehicles. The article also was selected the Kudos Sustainable Development Knowledge Cooperative, which aims to increase the impact and accessibility of academic research in the topics of sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
