Renewal
The research objective of SHRP 2 highway renewal is to achieve renewal that is performed rapidly, causes minimum disruption, and produces long-lived facilities. A related objective is to achieve such renewal not just on isolated, high-profile projects, but consistently throughout the nation’s highway system. Projects that comprise the SHRP 2 Renewal Research Plan SHRP 2 Renewal Research Plan are shown in the Projects database, which is organized by project number. Click the project number for a description of the expected project activity.
SHRP 2 Project Brief: Railroad-DOT Institutional Mitigation Strategies
Posted January 27, 2010
TRB’s second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) has released a
project brief that summarizes SHRP 2 Renewal project R16, which
explored strategies, arrangements, techniques, and processes designed
to help facilitate beneficial relationships between railroads and
public agencies. The final report of the project includes eight model
agreements that can be modified to meet the legal requirements and
accepted contracting processes of individual agencies and railroads.

Request for Demonstration Project Sites
Posted January 20, 2010
SHRP 2 Project R06C: Using Infrared (IR) and High-Speed Ground
Penetrating Radar (GPR) for Uniformity Measurements on New Hot Mix
Asphalt (HMA) Layers will conduct three demonstration projects in
2010. The project is seeking sites from AASHTO Regions 1, 2, and 3 to
demonstrate these technologies. This demonstration includes an
infrared temperature survey during placement of the HMA, and a radar
survey after completion of finish rolling, to locate potentially
segregated areas. Candidate projects should be surface mixes. A
minimum of 10 cores will be needed to study the relationship between
the nondestructive test data and the HMA density, asphalt content, and
gradation. To nominate a site, please complete this form and e-mail it to Stephen Sebesta at the Texas Transportation Institute.
New Report: Encouraging Innovation in Locating and Characterizing Underground Utilities
Posted October 30, 2009
TRB's second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) Report S2-R01-RW: Encouraging Innovation in Locating and Characterizing Underground Utilities explores underground utility locating practices, examines current and emerging technologies, and identifies potential areas for improvement and for subsequent research. Report S2-R01-RW is only available in electronic format.
New
Report: A Plan for Developing High-Speed, Nondestructive Testing
Procedures for Both Design Evaluation and Construction Inspection
Posted September 11, 2009
TRB’s second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) Report S2-R06-RW:
A Plan for Developing High-Speed, Nondestructive Testing Procedures for
Both Design Evaluation and Construction Inspection examines
existing and emerging nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technologies and
their current state of implementation to satisfy the NDE needs for
highway renewal. The report also explores a research plan for the
development of NDE technologies to address the most pertinent needs for
bridges, pavements, tunnels, soils, and retaining walls through the
life of the facility. Report S2-R06-RW is only available in electronic
format.

TRB’s second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) Report S2-R15-RW: Integrating the Priorities of Transportation Agencies and Utility Companies
examines current practices, opportunities for enhancement, and
anticipated barriers for integrating utility and transportation agency
priorities in highway renewal projects. The report also explores 13
best practices that span the whole project life cycle and highlights a
plan for future research in this field. Report S2-R15-RW is only
