TRB Webinar: Implementation of International-Roughness-Index-based Smoothness Specifications for Bridges and Approaches: Lessons Learned

TRB conducted a webinar on November 17, 2014, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm ET that addressed smoothness issues for bridge deck and approaches to assist those who have struggled with implementation. Presenters from Ohio DOT and Texas DOT shared their lessons learned and discussed actions that their states have taken to further smoothness specifications.

  • PART 3: Federal Highway Administration’s Profile Viewer and Analyzer (ProVAL) software analysis and diamond grinding simulation
  • PART 4: Perspective of an Ohio paving and bridge contractor
  • PART 5: Perspective of an Ohio diamond grinding contractor
  • PART 6: Implementation of PN 555 and lessons learned
  • PART 7: Question and answer session
The first 90 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions. The Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP) categorizes this webinar activity as relating to health, safety, and welfare including core technical.


Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
  • Summarize bridge smoothness characteristics and issues;
  • Analyze bridge smoothness in terms of IRI and grinding simulation; and
  • Evaluate bridge smoothness for construction acceptance in specifications.

Professional Development Hour Information
A certificate for two Professional Development Hours (PDHs) will be provided to Professional Engineers (PEs) who register and attend the webinar as an individual. For groups, only the person that registers and attends the session will receive a PDH certificate.

Individuals registered as Florida PEs are required to email Reggie Gillum, RGillum@nas.edu, with their license number.

Please check with your licensing board to ensure that TRB webinar PDHs are approved by your board.

This webinar was developed in December 2013. TRB has met the standards and requirements of the Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP). Credit earned on completion of this program will be reported to RCEP by TRB. Certificates of Completion will be issued to individuals who register for and attend the entire webinar session.
