 TRB 89th Annual Meeting - January 10-14, 2010

Conservation and the Annual Meeting

TRB is making a concerted effort to be “green” during the TRB Annual Meeting. The following is a timeline featuring the measures TRB has taken to conserve and the year of implementation.

TRB Annual Meeting Conservation Measures:

2009
  • The Annual Meeting Announcement, previously printed, becomes available in electronic format only.
  • The meeting hotels provide recycling bins for paper and plastic at TRB's request.
  • Onsite signs are consolidated to reduce the number of paper signs.
  • Full size motor coaches are utilized for the shuttle service.
  • 2008
  • Recycled paper products are used for Annual Meeting publications.
  • Formerly printed programs (such as Deen Distinguished Lecture) are supplied electronically or eliminated.
  • The number of online registrants has increased steadily each year, with an impressive 92% registering without paper for the January 2008 Annual Meeting.
  • With the advent of commercial exhibits, TRB prohibits exhibitors from the common practice of leaving printed materials outside hotel guest rooms.
  • At TRB’s request, most hotels provide guests with “reuse” housekeeping options for bed and bath linens.
  • The 2008 Annual Meeting attendee survey (sent electronically) solicited suggestions to help TRB conserve resources related to the meeting.
  • 2002
  • Annual Meeting updates are primarily communicated through the TRB E-Newsletter and emails to conserve paper.
  • 2001
  • The Interactive Program on the web site replaces the printed Preliminary Program that was customarily mailed to thousands of people.
  • 1999
  • The Compendium of Papers DVD becomes available to each attendee, eliminating the need for paper pre-prints.
  • 1998
  • Online registration becomes available. Registration confirmations are sent electronically.
  • A bin for recycling name badges is placed at each of the meeting hotels. Incentives to recycle are now included to encourage attendee participation.
  • 1997
  • Onsite signs are consolidated to reduce the number of paper signs.
  • Network for the Needy makes it possible for the hotels to donate leftover food from Annual Meeting events to local charities.
