Conference Information

This year’s conference will include both the annual TRB Summer Ports, Waterways, Freight, and International Trade Conference, and the Joint Summer Meeting of the TRB Planning, Data, Finance, Administration, Freight, and Management Committees. The conference will provide attendees with a unique opportunity to attend sessions addressing subjects of common interest, participate in any of the more than 40 TRB standing committees meeting in conjunction with this conference, and networking with peers across a broad array of related topic areas. Other events being held in conjunction with the TRB 2005 Summer Conference include the Road Pricing Workshop, the Rail Passenger Caucus, and the Commodity Flow Survey Conference.

All registration types include all sessions, breaks, breakfasts, lunches, and the Sunday Opening Reception.

Spouses and guests are welcome to attend the Sunday Opening Reception and Tuesday Boston Harbor Dinner Cruise (note there is an additional fee for these events).

Local Area Information


Ports, Waterways, Freight & International Trade Conference

Each year, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) sponsors a summer conference focused on ports, waterways, freight, ferry transportation, and international trade and transportation. The Summer 2005 conference (more information on relevant sessions, tours, committee meetings, and other events) will be held at the Seaport Hotel in Boston, MA on July 10-13, 2005, concurrent with the Joint Midyear Meeting of TRB Committees on Planning, Economics, Finance and Management. The Boston region offers an exciting venue for the 2005 Conference, offering participants an opportunity to experience commercial shipping and cruise operations as well as ferry services. Among the broad range of topics and issues to be addressed at the conference are:

  • Maritime and transportation supply chain security, with a particular focus on LNG transport safety and security, , maritime domain awareness, passenger vessel security, and freight and intermodal security training.
  • Recent developments in port services and operations, with a particular focus on the New England region, including short sea (coastal) shipping services.
  • Major transportation and infrastructure investment, including harbor and waterway projects, the "Big Dig", and public funding of ferries and ferry operations.
  • Marine environmental issues, including air emissions from ships and port operations, control of ship-sourced oil pollution at sea, and introduction of aquatic invasive species.
  • Legislative and research updates on issues such as the Marine Transportation System, the prospects for SEA-21, the Water Resources Development Act, , the recommendations of U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy (An Ocean Blueprint for the 21st Century) and the integrated ocean observing system(s) (IOOS), and other topics.
In addition to the plenary sessions, the conference will include Midyear Meetings of several TRB standing committees. All conference attendees are invited to participate in the committee meetings.

Rail Committees

Thursday, July 7, 2005

Four committees from the TRB Rail Group will hold their midyear meetings jointly in Boston on Thursday, July 7. The committees that will meet are as follows:

  • Intercity Rail Passenger Systems (AR010)
  • Guided Intercity Passenger Transportation (AR020)
  • Railroad Operating Technologies (AR030)
  • Railway Maintenance (AR060)
The committees will hold separate business meetings in the morning, followed by jointly-sponsored technical sessions in the afternoon. Meeting agendas will be posted as they become available. There will be no registration fee for attending these meetings or sessions. Attendees will have the option of registering to attend the evening reception that will be part of the TRB Rail Passenger Caucus or to participate in the entire Caucus program, July 7-9.

The Rail Passenger Caucus is a biennial joint business meeting of the rail-oriented committees in the TRB Public Transportation Group (Intermodal Passenger Facilities, Rail Transit Systems, Commuter Rail Transportation, Light Rail Transit, and Intercity Rail Passenger Systems). The Caucus focuses on committee research program and agenda coordination along with outstanding educational opportunities to learn about Boston area rail passenger systems. Through host agency presentations and facility tours during revenue service, the participants will experience first-hand rail transit at the cosponsoring agencies (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, AMTRAK, Massachusetts Bay Commuter Rail Authority, and Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority).

Rail Passenger Caucus Preliminary Agenda

The TRB Joint Subcommittee on Pricing is hosting a day-long road pricing workshop to discuss and answer questions posed by state and local practitioners who are planning, developing, or implementing road pricing projects. This session is designed as an opportunity for experts and newcomers to share state-of-the-art knowledge on road pricing.
