TRB Volunteer Profile: Brian J. Gardner
Brian J. Gardner, Systems Planning and Analysis team leader at the Federal Highway Administration, is a featured volunteer in the
TR News. Mr. Gardner guided the deployment program for TRansportation
ANalysis SIMulation System (TRANSIMS), which analyzes
regional changes in travel patterns and mobility impacts of
such large-scale events as evacuations and facility closures.He has also advanced conceptual frameworks
for federated simulation and agent models of urban transport
systems, which were further developed under the
second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2). In addition, Mr. Gardner led the development of the open-source, agent-based,
urban systems simulation suite POLARIS, currently being used in research for energy and mobility issues related to vehicle
fleet changes and automation scenarios.
At TRB, Mr. Gardner was an active member in SHRP 2 and serves on the Standing Committee on Transportation
Demand Forecasting and of the Special Committee for Travel
Forecasting Resources. He has also published articles in The Transportation Research Record and helped developed the Travel Forecasting
Resource (TFResource) on travel demand modeling.
