TRB Webinar: Let’s work together: Airport emergency working groups

How quickly can airport staff respond to aviation incidents that result in injuries or deaths? TRB hosted a webinar on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM ET that explained how airports can efficiently provide aid to victims and their loved ones. The webinar discussed airport emergency working groups (EWGs) as a collaborative arrangement to providing more effective and rapid assistance. Airport EWGs are partnerships between airports, airlines, and other organizations that train and mobilize volunteers to help take care of victims and their families. Presenters will describe case examples to illustrate EWGs and other alternative methods for providing family assistance during the hours before the airline’s care team arrives.

This webinar draws on research from ACRP Synthesis Report 99: Airport Emergency Workgroups at Airports.

The slides are available.

Webinar Presenters:

  • James F. Smith, Smith-Woolwine, Inc.
  • Robert Merrill, Unaffiliated
  • Harold Shaw, Massport

Moderated by: Keila Walker-Denis, Greater Orlando Aviation Authority

 Webinar Outline

  1. Overview of EWG partnerships
  2. Tools to determine the need for an EWG and the steps to establishing them at airports
  3. Lessons learned from airport case studies
  4. Question and answer session

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, you will able to:

  • Discuss the importance of collaboration among airlines and airports when casualties trigger the need for family assistance
  • Describe the steps for setting up and sustaining an emergency working group (EWG) at an airport
  • Identify alternative approaches to fostering collaboration among airlines and airports

Continuing Education Units for Accredited Airport Executives

The American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) will provide 1.0 Continuing Education Unit (CEU) to accredited airport executives who attend this webinar. Claim CEUs by visiting www.aaae.org/ceu. For questions about AAAE continuing education units, please contact accreditation@aaae.org.

Registration is available until just before the webinar starts. Once the webinar starts, you will be unable to submit your registration. Individuals that are registered for a webinar but do not receive their confirmation emails due to their organization’s internal firewalls should contact the TRB Helpdesk for assistance in signing in.
