Hidden Costs of Energy: Unpriced Consequences of Energy Production and Use
Last Modified Date: 11/5/2009
The National Research Council has released a report that examines "hidden" costs of energy production and use--such as the health impacts of air pollution--that are not reflected in market prices of coal or oil. According to the committee that produced the report, the quantifiable damages alone were an estimated $120 billion in the United State in 2005, a number that reflects primarily health damages caused by air pollution from electricity generation and motor vehicle transportation. TRB is a division of the National Academies, which include the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council.
