State DOTs Work Towards Rigorous Air Quality Analysis on Projects

Assessing Air Pollution Dispersion Models for Emissions Regulation (NCHRP Research Report 1058). State departments of transportation (DOTs) conduct project-level air quality analyses to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act and meet transportation conformity rule requirements where applicable.

Agencies are interested in a rigorous and systematic model review and update process for regulatory dispersion models to ensure the models generate credible results.

For more on the topic, see our blog, Address Climate Change and Breathe Easier with Research on Transportation Emissions, and our Snap Search on Air Quality & Climate Change.

Integrating Resilience Concepts and Strategies into Transportation Planning: A Guide (NCHRP Research Report 1052)

Practices to Motivate Safe Behaviors with Highway Construction and Maintenance Crews (NCHRP Synthesis 608)

Enhancement of the Practice for Certification of Inertial Profiling Systems (NCHRP Research Report 1057)

Catch Up on Maritime Sustainability

Recordings from the Conference on the Marine Transportation System Innovative Science and Technologies Toward Greater Sustainability are now available. The conference identified research needs, barriers and potential progress related to overall environmental sustainability and decarbonization strategies. Particular emphasis was placed on lifecycle impacts, infrastructure requirements, vessel fleet considerations, and the necessary collaboration required among all MTS-related stakeholders and sectors.

TRID and RIP Enhancements

Optimize your searches! The Source menu in both TRID and Research In Progress’ Advanced search now provides checkboxes for each Source so you no longer need to execute multiple searches and combine them. All Sources are searched by default when no selection is made. When printing, emailing, or saving Marked Records from TRID or RIP, results can now be sorted by date or title.

The Result Type menu in TRID also provides checkboxes, and two or more Result Types can be selected in a single search. As with the Source menu, the default operator is OR and all Result Types are searched by default.

An icon now accompanies project records in TRID result lists to make them easier to distinguish between records describing publications or datasets.

TRB In the News

Recycled Plastic.JPG

“We were trying to find a solution that will create a large amount of demand for recycled plastics, and we were also trying to find a solution that has a long-use life,” says Zhiye Li, a postdoctoral scholar in civil and environmental engineering at Stanford University. Fast Company reports on a white paper that unveils viable ways to reuse waste plastics that are hiding in plain sight. The paper is an appendix to the latest TRB consensus report.

"Colleges hoping to strengthen their sustainability bona fides while enhancing student life should see public transportation agencies as allies," reports Bloomberg. The article cites a 2018 TCRP synthesis on higher education transit discount programs.
