TRB Minority Student Fellows - Hispanic Heritage Month
“As a TRB Minority Student Fellow I was exposed to highly technical scientific writing, which helps me daily in my role as an Engineer of Record and Roadway Designer at Choice Engineering because I frequently compose documents explaining technical concepts to other professionals. I was also afforded the opportunity to strengthen my public speaking skills, which has been critical for me as a Project Manager because I have presented to government employees and citizens on various occasions. Aside from the professional benefits, the trip to DC was inspiring for me because I had never been to the capital, and I had never seen so many professionals from so many different backgrounds. This trip opened my eyes to various perspectives and potential career opportunities,” says Mario Rojas, former TRB Minority Student Fellow.
“Because I live in Miami, within a large Hispanic population, my heritage is usually lived more than discussed. In the early 1960s my family fled the brutal Cuban Communist regime and struggled when they arrived in Miami. For example, my grandparents lived off government rations when they first arrived. Their experience of Miami was vastly different than mine, but our shared experience has solidified the importance of God, family, and hard work into our DNA.”
