Predicting Visitor Demand, Vehicle Travel to "America's Great Outdoors"

Recreational travel is a major and growing activity in the United States. Recreation trips to outdoor parklands tend to have different characteristics than trips for other types of recreation, such as entertainment, sporting events, and regular exercise.

Accessing America's Great Outdoors: Forecasting Recreational Travel Demand (NCHRP Web-Only Document 380), from TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program, was released this week and builds a set of models and open-source tools to predict recreational travel demand to “America’s Great Outdoors.” The demand models and tools created in this project could allow states, regional agencies, and public land managers to predict visitor demand and vehicle travel to their recreational sites under a variety of future scenarios.

TRB In the News

Soils.png

The Soil Water Characteristic Curve holds significant importance in soil analysis. A new journal article in TRB's Transportation Research Record offers potentially valuable insights to soil scientists, geotechnical engineers, and hydrologists, enabling them to gain a better understanding of soil behavior in varying climatic conditions and adapt their designs accordingly. SUNY Polytechnic Institute cites the research.

There is a debate on Capitol Hill over the recent temporary hold on companies being allowed to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) by rail. A FOX News article references a 2022 National Academies/TRB report on transporting LNG by rail.
