Bike Ped Safety Intersections_NCHRP WOD 408.JPG

This time of year is especially difficult, with days getting darker earlier, for roadway safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. The number of bicyclists killed in traffic crashes has been steadily increasing since 2010 with an average of 779 killed between 2012 to 2016, 890 from 2017 to 2021, and peaking at 966 killed in 2021. NCHRP Research Report 1125: Reducing Conflicts Between Turning Motor Vehicles and Bicycles: Decision Tool and Design Guidelines and NCHRP Web-Only Document 408: Design Options to Reduce Conflicts Between Turning Motor Vehicles and Bicycles: Conduct of Research Report were released this week by TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program. They present a decision tool and design guidelines to help highway safety practitioners reduce turning motor vehicle–bicycle conflicts at intersections.

The Oregon Department of Transportation Statewide Pedestrian and Bicycle Plan documents how the agency performed a statewide systemic safety analysis on its highway network. This work followed the seven-step systemic safety process outlined in one of TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program reports. The results of the Oregon project provided lessons learned for other states and local agencies. These and other impacts demonstrating the value of transportation research are detailed in "From Concept to Practice: NCHRP's Implementation Support Program," an article in TR News 351, the latest issue of TRB's quarterly magazine.
