Benefits of Attending the TRB Annual Meeting for the Utah DOT: A National Academies Podcast
The National Academies has released a
podcast, as part of its Sounds of Science series, that highlights a process the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) uses that has allowed the Department to realize more than $3.8 million in savings for every UDOT employee who has attended a TRB Annual Meeting since 2003. The Research Division of the UDOT Project Development Group coordinates this process and tracks the progress of implementation of key ideas brought back from the Annual Meeting by UDOT personnel. Since the tracking process began in 2003, UDOT has implemented 136 innovative ideas relating to contracting methods, safety improvements, accelerated bridge construction, and other areas and has realized more than $189 million dollars in actual savings.
TRB is one of six major divisions of the National Research Council— a private, nonprofit institution that is the principal operating agency of the National Academies in providing services to the government, the public, and the scientific and engineering communities. The National Research Council is jointly administered by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine.
