Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment
The National Research Council has released Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment that reviews the current state of the science regarding oil spill response and environmental assessment in the Arctic region north of the Bering Strait, with emphasis on the potential impacts in U.S. waters. This report describes the unique ecosystems and environment of the Arctic and makes recommendations to provide an effective response effort in these challenging conditions. In addition, it identifies key oil spill research priorities, critical data and monitoring needs, mitigation strategies, and operational and logistical issues.
Development of the report was overseen by the Division of Life and Earth Studies’ (DELS) Committee on Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment and TRB’s Marine Board. DELS, like TRB, is a division of the National Academies, which include the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council.
