TRB Webcast: Funding and Managing the U.S. Inland Waterways System: What Policymakers Need to Know

TRB conducted a webcast on June 16, 2015 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM ET in Washington, D.C. to explore findings from TRB Special Report 315: Funding and Managing the U.S. Inland Waterways System: What Policymakers Need to Know. Participants must register in advance. The event agenda is available.

The recorded webcast is available. Download a copy of the presentations.

Panelists include committee members and invited discussants:
  • Chris Hendrickson, Committee Chair, Carnegie Mellon University
  • Michael Bronzini, Committee Member, George Mason University
  • Leonard Shabman, Committee Member, Resources for the Future
  • Jack Wells, U.S. Department of Transportation (retired)
  • Mike Toohey, Waterways Council, Inc.
  • Craig Philip, Vanderbilt Center for Transportation Research, and Ingram Barge Company (retired)
The panel will be moderated by: Steve Godwin, Transportation Research Board

The study is motivated by:
  • Reports of deteriorating and aged infrastructure
  • The perception of inadequate capital investment
  • A growing backlog of capital projects
  • The decline of federal funding for inland navigation
Panelists will present key findings and provide commentary from waterways industry and national freight transportation perspectives. Discussion will focus on implications of the findings for decisions about the level of investment required for the system and options for funding. The event is designed for stakeholders and policymakers to ask questions about the key findings.

No Professional Development Hours will be provided to attendees and there is no fee for registering.

For questions about this event or to submit questions about the report prior to the event, please contact Lisa Berardi Marflak at LMarflak@nas.edu.
