TRB Volunteer Profile: Dr. Erol Tutumluer
Dr. Erol Tutumluer, professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), is a featured volunteer in the
TR News. Dr. Tutumluer specializes in transportation geotechnics, and his research focuses on designing and building a sustainable transportation infrastructure by applying geotechnical engineering and geomechanics principles.
Dr. Tutumluer also serves as the Director of International Programs at CEE, where he coordinates education and research partnerships between UIUC and other institutions across the globe. Additionally, he is currently leading an effort to develop a mechanistic-based flexible pavement design and evaluation software package for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Dr. Tutumluer’s other multi-year research projects include analyzing airport pavement deformation data for the Federal Aviation Administration, developing sustainable pavement applications and performance prediction metrics for large-sized, recycled and byproduct aggregate materials for the Illinois Department of Transportation, and developing better rutting performance models for aggregate bases and unbound pavement materials for the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
At TRB, he serves as the chair for the Geological and Geoenvironmental Engineering Section, and is a member of the Design and Construction Group and Standing Committee on Geosynthetics. He has also been the primary investigator for several NCHRP panels dealing with aggregate.
The TR News is a bimonthly publication of TRB that features articles on innovative and timely research and development activities in all modes of transportation.
