TRB's SHRP 2 Tuesdays Webinar: Nondestructive Testing Technologies for Concrete Bridge Decks (R06A)

As part of the SHRP2 Tuesdays Webinar Series, TRB conducted a webinar on May 21, 2013 from 2:00 p.m.- 3:30 p.m. ET that explored Nondestructive Testing to Identify Concrete Bridge Deck Deterioration, a report and toolbox developed by the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) Renewal Project R06A. View the recorded webinar.

Concrete bridge decks in poor structural condition are a major problem affecting bridges in the United States. Nondestructive Testing (NDT) techniques have the potential to quickly and reliably provide information about under-the-surface conditions of these decks so that informed treatment decisions can be made.

The report evaluates the capabilities and limitations of the most common NDT techniques for detecting and characterizing typical deterioration mechanisms in concrete bridge decks. The report includes an evaluation of the following NDT capabilities and limitations: accuracy, precision, ease of use, speed, and cost. It also documents the validation of promising technologies, and grades and ranks the technologies based on results of the validations.

The main product of SHRP 2 Renewal Project R06A will be an electronic repository for practitioners, known as the NDToolbox, which will provide information regarding recommended technologies for the detection of a particular deterioration.

Webinar Presenters:
• Nenad Gucunski, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey
• Shane Boone, Federal Highway Administration
• Kelley Rehm, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO)
• Monica A. Starnes, The National Academies

Webinar Outline:
• Part 1: Brief overview of SHRP 2 mission, objectives of the Renewal focus area and related SHRP 2 research
• Part 2: Technical presentation focused field validation testing, research outcomes, and products Part 3: Introduction to the NDT Toolbox and other SHRP 2 NDT tools
• Part 4: Implementation plans, actions, and opportunities
• Part 5: Question and Answer session

The first 60 minutes of the webinar is for presentations and the final 30 minutes is reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives:
• Identify the 4 high-potential technologies for detecting delamination and corrosion
• Identify the evaluated technology for vertical crack characterization
• Understand the basis for deciding which equipment types to choose
• Learn about the NDT Toolbox and what resources it provides
