TRB’s SHRP 2 Tuesdays Webinar: Bridges for Service Life Beyond 100 Years: Innovative Systems, Subsystems, and Components (R19A)

As part of the SHRP2 Tuesdays Webinar Series, TRB conducted a webinar on October 29, 2013 from 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. ET that explored the project Bridges for Service Life beyond 100 Years: Innovative Systems, Subsystems, and Components, which produced the report Design Guide for Bridges for Service Life as well as a companion research report with technical appendices.

The main objective of the guide is to provide information and define procedures to systematically design new and existing bridges for service life and durability. The guide will assist users with applying a systematic framework that is both universal and specific to address local issues.

Enhancing bridge service life during an era of limited resources has led to the prominence of the design-for-service-life philosophy. The cost of addressing service life issues at the design stage is significantly lower than actions taken during the maintenance and preservation stage. In general, the design-for-service-life approach utilizes individual strategies, each capable of enhancing service life of a particular bridge element that historically has experienced a limited service life.

This webinar will include information about the findings from this SHRP 2 project, including:

• A review of the service life design approach and the current state of practice.
• Overview of the service life systematic approach and framework.
• Guidelines for application of the guide at a project and program level.
• Benefits assessment of applying the guide.
• Project implementation approach.

The intended audiences for this webinar are bridge engineers and owners at local, state, and federal transportation agencies; representatives of the bridge design, preservation, and construction industry; professional organizations; and consulting organizations with a strong business investment in the design, construction, and preservation of bridges.

• Part 3: User experience (or intended future vision of use) of the guide from a state or local department of transportation.
• Part 4. Related FHWA research and planned implementation activities for this SHRP 2 project.
• Part 5: Question and answer session.

The first 60 minutes of the webinar is for presentations and the final 30 minutes is reserved for audience questions.
