TRB’s SHRP 2 Tuesdays Webinar: SHRP 2 Evaluating Hot Mix Asphalt Using Non-Destructive Technologies (R06C & R06D)

As part of the SHRP2 Tuesdays Webinar Series, TRB conducted a webinar on June 3rd, 2014, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm ET that summarized SHRP 2 Project R06C:
Technologies to Enhance Quality Control on Asphalt Pavements; and SHRP 2 Project R06D: Nondestructive (NDT) Testing to Identify Delaminations between HMA Layers. There was no fee to attend this webinar or other webinars in the SHRP 2 Series; however, participants must have registered in advance.  A certificate for two Professional Development Hours (PDH) was provided to attendees who registered and attended the webinar as an individual.

Project R06C reviewed, pilot-tested, and refined two nondestructive techniques—PAVE-IR and ground-penetrating radar--for detecting defect areas in asphalt pavements during construction. Recommendations for equipment and testing protocols were also developed, and a training video explaining how to use the technologies and interpret the data was produced. Project R06D reviewed, pilot-tested, and produced guidelines for using ground-penetrating radar. It also covered impact echo with seismic analysis of surface waves to detect subsurface delamination in asphalt pavement.

Webinar Presenters
  • Stephen Sebesta, Texas Transportation Institute- R06C
  • Michael  Heitzman, National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT)
  • Stephen Cooper, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)

Moderated by: Matthew Miller, Transportation Research Board

Webinar Outline
  • PART 1: Brief overview of the SHRP 2 mission, objectives of the Renewal focus area, and related SHRP 2 research
  • PART 2: Presentation on the SHRP2 R06C Project
  • PART 3: Presentation on the SHRP2 R06D Project
  • PART 4: FHWA’s perspective on R06C and R06D
  • PART 5: Question and answer session

The first 90 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
  • Describe several different nondestructive techniques for detecting defect areas in asphalt pavements during construction and subsurface delamination in asphalt pavement post-construction;
  • List the drawbacks of current standard testing methods for detecting defect areas in asphalt pavements both during and after construction;
  • Define the appropriate measurement and data format standards for using NDT technologies as well as when and when not to use them in the evaluation of asphalt pavements;

To ensure that you receive notices about upcoming webinars, please subscribe to the TRB Transportation Research E-Newsletter.

Registration Information
This webinar is sponsored by SHRP 2, and no fee is associated with registering for this webinar.  After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

Professional Development Hour Information
A certificate for two Professional Development Hours (PDH) will be provided to Professional Engineers (PEs) who register and attend the webinar as an individual.  For groups, only the person who registers and attends the session will receive a PDH certificate.

Individuals registered as Florida PEs are required to email Reggie Gillum, RGillum@nas.edu, with their license number.

This webinar was developed in April 2014.  TRB has met the standards and requirements of the Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP).  Credit earned on completion of this program will be reported to RCEP by TRB.  Certificates of Completion will be issued to individuals who register for and attend the entire webinar session.  Complaints about registered providers may be sent to RCEP, PO Box 1686, Clemson, SC, 29633.  Website: www.RCEP.net.
