TRB conducted a webinar on Monday, August 20, 2018, from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM ET that discusses the Observation Method for Scour (OMS) tool. Bridge scour is the number one cause of bridge failures in the United States. OMS addresses uncertainties in bridge design associated with bridge scour predictions by relying significantly on past observations at the bridge.
This webinar presented bridge scour case histories from Texas and Massachusetts where engineers used OMS; compare the predicted scour depths between OMS and current Federal Highway Administration guidelines; and compare the predicted scour depths to measured values. The presenters also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of using OMS.
This webinar was organized by the TRB Standing Committee on Hydrology and Hydraulics and the TRB Standing Committee on Foundations of Bridges and Other Structures. Contact Reggie Gillum at
RGillum@nas.edu for instructions on receiving a copy of the recorded webinar.
