TRB Webinar: Designing Beyond - Improving Airport Operations through BIM

TRB Webinar: Designing Beyond - Improving Airport Operations through BIM

Airports can use Building Information Modeling (BIM) practices to improve their facility operations and asset management processes. TRB hosted a webinar on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 from 2:00 to 3:30 PM Eastern that presented data collected from a digital survey of over 60 airports, and interviews with airport staff, consultants, and contractors. Presenters identified industries with similar infrastructure management, such as healthcare and universities, to provide examples of where BIM had been more widely used beyond the design phase of capital projects. They also discussed how to implement BIM, how to develop a business case for BIM, and how to establish governance of the BIM program within an organization. The webinar presented case studies to illustrate how BIM can lower the life cycle cost of managing airports while improving reliability, safety, and quality. This topic is particularly relevant during this coronavirus disease (COVID-19) response period where airports are struggling to reduce costs while trying to improve the cleanliness and safety of their terminals.

The webinar features research from ACRP Research Report 214: BIM Beyond Design Guidebook.

The slides are available.

Webinar agenda and presenters:

  1. The major components of a comprehensive, lifecycle BIM program: Angela Newland, CCI Engineering Services
  2. Which BIM metrics can be in place to establish effective BIM controls and measure success: Jack Ray, CCI Engineering Services
  3. Overview of airport survey data on current use of BIM: Angela Newland, CCI Engineering Services
  4. Airport case studies: Jack Ray, CCI Engineering Services

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, you will able to:

  1. Describe lifecycle BIM practices
  2. Identify how to implement BIM effectively

Continuing Education Units for Accredited Airport Executives

The American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) will provide 1 Continuing Education Unit (CEU) to accredited airport executives who attend this webinar. Claim CEUs by visiting www.aaae.org/ceu. For questions about AAAE continuing education units, please contact accreditation@aaae.org.

Registration is available until just before the webinar starts. Once the webinar starts, you will be unable to submit your registration. Individuals who are registered for a webinar but do not receive their confirmation emails due to their organization’s internal firewalls should contact the TRB Helpdesk for assistance in signing in.
