National Cooperative Highway Research Program
A forum for coordinated and collaborative research, the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) addresses issues integral to the state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) and transportation professionals at all levels of government and the private sector. The NCHRP provides practical, ready-to-implement solutions to pressing problems facing the industry.
The NCHRP is administered by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) and sponsored by the member departments (i.e., individual state departments of transportation) of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Individual projects are conducted by contractors with oversight provided by volunteer panels of expert stakeholders.
The AASHTO Standing Committee on Research met on March 17-18, 2016, to select projects for the NCHRP's FY 2017 program. Requests for proposals are expected to be issued for the projects in this announcement. NCHRP is also soliciting panel nominations for these projects; panel nominations are due no later than May 6, 2016.
During 2015 NCHRP completed 84 research projects, published 62 research products, and approved 61 new and continuation projects. This Annual Report provides a concise list of research published in 2015, all active projects, projects completed in 2015, and projects that were approved in 2015 but not yet under contract. The Annual Report also presents detailed information about the operation of NCHRP through the AASHTO Standing Committee on Research.
An implementation facilitation plan for NCHRP research results was prepared for the AASHTO Standing Committee on Research and approved in December 2015.
Evaluating Implementation of NCHRP Products: Building on Successful Practices identifies the four key elements to successful implementation: implementation leadership, buy-in, structural support and resources, and ready-to-use products. Ten case studies of selected NCHRP products highlight a range of effective approaches to implementation.
Information on all projects initiated under the NCHRP from its inception in 1962 through 1988 is included in NCHRP Web Document 7: Special Edition of Summary of Progress through 1988.
Unfunded CRP problem statements will be posted periodically as each program's fiscal year project selection is made.
Among the variety of methods the National Cooperative Highway Research Program uses to showcase the value of NCHRP research is a series of success stories titled Impacts on Practice. These brief case studies highlight how transportation agencies have put critical NCHRP research results to use nationwide in the following areas:
