Motor Carrier Safety
Each year approximately 5,000 fatalities and 130,000 severe injuries result from crashes involving large trucks. At the request of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), a TRB committee reviewed the agency’s major, multiyear study on the causes of such crashes. In creating the agency, Congress required that it conduct this study to develop the most cost-effective strategies for reducing the mortality associated with truck crashes. The committee advised FMCSA on the study’s design, sampling, and data collection; the interpretation of pilot test results; and the conclusions that can be drawn from the preliminary results.
