TRB’s SHRP 2 Tuesdays Webinar: Establishing Monitoring Programs for Mobility and Travel Time Reliability (L02)

As part of the SHRP2 Tuesdays Webinar Series, TRB conducted a webinar on August 6, 2013 from 2:00 p.m.- 3:30 p.m. ET that explored the project Establishing Monitoring Programs for Travel Time Reliability, which provides concepts and procedures that public agencies can use to design systems to build, maintain, operate, and monitor travel-time reliability. View the recorded webinar.

When average travel time increases or travel time is too variable to predict, vehicle drivers pay a cost when they do not arrive on time or when they waste time arriving early.  The SHRP 2 research reports, Establishing Monitoring Programs for Travel Time Reliability and Guide to Establishing Monitoring Programs for Travel Time Reliability, describe how transportation agencies can build upon their existing traffic monitoring system to enhance it with a travel time reliability monitoring system to help road users better predict their trips.

Webinar Presenters:
  • Bob Rupert, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
  • Patricia Hu, U.S. Department of Transportation Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA)
  • George List, North Carolina State University
  • Matthew Miller, Transportation Research Board

Moderated by: Abdelmename Hedhli, Transportation Research Board

Webinar Outline:
  • Part 1: Brief overview of SHRP 2 mission, objectives of the Reliability focus area, and introduction to SHRP 2 Project L02
  • Part 2: Brief overview of the pilot tests of the core SHRP 2 Reliability analytical products (SHRP 2 Project L38)
  • Part 3: Problems and perspectives regarding travel time reliability from FHWA
  • Part 4: Introduction to concepts, training materials, and processes and practices to help agencies design a travel time reliability monitoring system by using the guidebook for designing, building, operating, and maintaining those systems

The first 60 minutes of the webinar is for presentations and the final 30 minutes is reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives:
  • To learn how to develop a travel time reliability monitoring system that builds upon and enhances an existing traffic monitoring system.
  • To become familiar with collecting travel time data that varies over time as well as the integration of data in a way that explains sources of variation.
  • To learn how to characterize the variability of travel time in terms of probability distribution functions and to diagnose and visualize the causes of congestion.
  • To understand where opportunities exist to mitigate the impact of sources of unreliability in the system.
