TRB Webinar: Guidance for Understanding WiFi Disruptions and Cyber Security at Airports

TRB conducted a webinar on Thursday, November 5, 2015, from 2:00 to 3:30PM ET that featured research conducted by TRB’s Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP). The research discussed topics of ever growing concern to the airport community. Facility managers and planners, information technology professionals, and airport consultants and tenants gained an understanding of the issues caused by WiFi disruptions and cyber-attacks, and were provided with resources and best practices to help address these concerns.

Participants must register in advance of the webinar, and there is no fee associated with this webinar.

This webinar provided 1.5 Continuing Education Units for Accredited Airport Executives. This webinar has met approval by the American Institute of Certified Planners for 1.5 Certification Maintenance Credits.

Here are the slides from the presentation.

Webinar Presenters
  • Randy Murphy, Grafton Technology
  • Mike Carroll, System Planning Corporation
  • Stephen Berger, TEM Consulting
Moderator: Aneil Patel, ACI

Webinar Outline
  • ACRP Project 05-02, Airport Cyber Security Best Practices
    1. Increased awareness, training, and a cyber-security program
    2. Findings and summary of training and resources that airports have begun to use
  • ACRP Project 01-23, Mitigating Disruptive WiFi Interference at Airports
    1. How wireless is used and where interference is a problem or likely to become a problem
    2. Root causes and forces that produce the current situation and future trends in wireless devices that could help resolve or exacerbate the problem
The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, participants were able to:
  • Comprehend the importance of cyber-security to airports
  • Summarize how to help protect your airports from cyber-attacks
  • Understand how wireless usage may lead to interference problems and can be addressed or possibly avoided
  • Analyze how to resolve, minimize, or even prevent future interference problems through changing structural and business dynamics
