TRB Weekly covers the latest in transportation research.

Rural.JPG

Serving Rural and Low Volume Roads

The geographic diversity of the United States is one of its many charms. While the 2020 census shows that most metropolitan areas have grown and rural counties have not, when you take your horse (or bus) to the old town road (or airport, or train station), economic and social connections can be equitably within reach. Find resources for serving the unique needs of rural populations in our updated blog post.

Connect with a global community on similar issues at TRB's International Conference on Low Volume Roads later this month in Cedar Rapids, IA.

TRB Annual Meeting

Submit TRB Annual Meeting Papers Early

The system can slow down during intense traffic, so don’t wait until the last minute to submit your paper! Avoid having your article rejected on a technicality. Adhere to the guidelines outlined in the Instructions for Authors. Successful submissions receive a paper number and confirmation email. Submissions still in progress after August 1 will be removed. Papers don't have to respond to a specific Call for Papers; they can cover any transportation-related topic.

Secure Your Visa Today

If you will require a visa to enter the United States to attend the 103rd TRB Annual Meeting, January 7-11, in Washington, D.C., begin planning for the application process now. Even if you didn't need a visa for a previous Annual Meeting, please re-check the current requirements.

News to Know

AI Continues to Get a Close Look from Academies' Presidents

Back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, "bicycles afforded women (and men, of course) unprecedented mobility and freedom, which some feared could lead to promiscuity and moral decay. Adopting this new technology required overcoming the fear of social disruption," notes National Academy of Engineering President John L. Anderson (pictured) in an opinion piece in Microsoft Unlocked.

He makes the case that, similarly, the potential benefits of generative AI "are perhaps greatest for underprivileged students. Accessibility should be a key goal."

TRB In the News

Girl and Train.JPG

Recently, video footage and news coverage of a girl climbing through a train to get to school in Hammond, IN sparked a conversation on one of the many angles on the topic of the length of trains in the U.S. In one article, CBS in Colorado Springs, CO cited TRB's upcoming consensus report on long trains.

As L.A. Metro prepares to cap the amount transit riders pay, GOVERNING cites TRB's Transit Cooperative Research Program report on fare capping.

To address some of the recent problems with flight delays, The National Academies and TRB may be called upon to study the possibility of beefing up hiring of air traffic controllers, notes POLITICO.
