Comparing Regional Energy Consumption for Direct Drone and Truck Deliveries

Drone delivery, once thought of as fictitious, is becoming a reality with the efforts of both forward-looking enterprises and supportive government policies. In this recent study in Transportation Research Record, TRB's journal, the authors develop and apply methods to quantify the regional energy impacts of drone delivery, then assess these impacts and compare them with the impacts of truck delivery.

Research Pays Off for Asphalt Cracking Test

Over the past five years, researchers at the Texas A&M Transportation
Institute developed and implemented a simple and practical indirect tension asphalt cracking test (IDEAL-CT) for use during asphalt balanced mix design and quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) testing. "Indirect Tension Asphalt Cracking Test: Ensuring Asphalt Mix Designs for Durable Pavements," by Fujie Zhou and Kelly West, details the work in the "Research Pays Off" section of the May-June 2023 edition (Issue 345) of TR News, TRB's magazine.

News to Know

TRB Minority Student Fellows - Hispanic Heritage Month

"I started studying civil engineering and always was interested in urban planning. I found the sustainable built environments program and it was something I was passionate about. Growing up in Nogales, AZ I saw the unique social and environmental impacts that affected it as a border town. University of Arizona has a strong presence in Nogales. I ended up working with a local green infrastructure group. They had collaborated with U of A, and I saw that the university has a lot of Hispanic professors and is doing a lot of work in Hispanic communities," says Ash Avila, part of the 2021-2022 cohort.
